How To Filter Waste Vegetable Oil - WVO

Filtering waste, used vegetable oil is the first step in using it as fuel in a diesel vehicle. Since most used vegetable oil has been used to fry food, there are normally food particles in the waste oil you collect. It's important that the fuel is clean, free from particles. The normally acceptable level to filter down to is about 5-10 microns and is often done in stages with several filters starting at higher micro levels like 100 or 200, and then going down to 5-10.

The filtering system in the video above is fairly sophisticated and advanced. This type of filter works well, although is not necessary to filter used vegetable oil properly. You can filter your waste vegetable oil with as little as a barrel, sock filter and strainer like the video below demonstrates. You can also use one or two conventional household water filters, some hose and a fuel or oil pump. Water block filters are also important to remove any excess water in the used vegetable oil. Water block filters are often placed last in the chain of filters after filtering out the larger physical particles. Heating the oil as mentioned in the video below also burns off the water as well and can be used instead of a water block filter. This fellow filters his oil in an apartment utility room so don't let space or your housing limit you, you can filter and use waste vegetable oil in your diesel vehicle just about anywhere.
